A Band I Love – Selfish C*nt & Astral Pattern, by Charlie Boyer

For our first October edition of A Band I Love, British indie rock musician and frontman of The Voyeurs, Charlie Boyer, has chosen to write about two bands – one old, and one new. Read on to see what he had to say about both Selfish C*nt and Astral Pattern.

Selfish C*nt are/were (I’m not sure if they are even still together) provocative and dangerous and all those things a band should be. The beautiful singer seemed to know a thing or two about ballet also, he was a joy to watch. Their first single was called Britain is Shit, backed with Fuck the Poor, and instead of arriving in a sleeve it came in a police evidence bag. I think what they were doing 10 years ago is very relevant now and I do hope they resurface (if they have really gone at all?). They made 2 albums – one minimal and drum machine based, and the other a more traditional rock and roll thing. Both are interesting and should be listened to.

Astral Pattern are my favourite new group. They are making electronic music that sounds wonderful at all volumes. I’m really looking forward to hearing an album from them. Their songs slip and shift and change and they [Astral Pattern] just stand there calmly listening and preening them to perfection.

October’s A Band I Love series continues with submissions from Hands Like Houses and the Fat White Family.
