Ghost‘s Cardinal Copia is no more.
During a larger than life show at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City last night, the band’s frontman said goodbye to his role as Cardinal, undertaking a life changing ritual which transformed him into Papa Emeritus IV.

Gracias México City for your hospitality and warmth. We couldn’t pick a better place to witness the anointment of Cardinal Copia to Papa Emeritus IV. Papa and the ghouls are incredibly thankful for all your wonderful gifts. Looking forward to seeing all of you in 2021. #papaemeritusiv #namelessghouls #namelessghoulettes
Reason for the transformation stems back to the death of Papa Nihil, who passed away during last night’s show, having breathed his final breath during Miasma’s epic sax solo. Watch Copia’s anointment at the foot of this article.
The anointment comes as Ghost move on from the campaign in support of 2018’s Prequelle and move forward with album number five in 2021. Speaking to All Things Loud last year, Ghost main man Tobias Forge explained that the band’s fifth album would be a continuation of the stories explored on Prequelle.
