Dutch tour manager Etjen van der Vliet just can’t sit still. Over the course of 2017, the multi-skilled master kept himself busy by means of multiple tours with a whole host of artists, all the while juggling it alongside his award-winning vegan catering company Just Like Your Mom and a job as stage manager at the Melkweg in Amsterdam. We asked Etjen to summarise his year for us in pictures, with the result serving as an expansive diary which delves deep into the inner workings of his escapades.
“Here I am on the road with Courtney Marie Andrews and her new album Honest Life. This run brought us all over Europe, but it’s always good to be home at the Backstage Hotel in Amsterdam, Paradiso or just lying in the van…“
“While being on the road with Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown, I had a day off during the Best Kept Secret weekend. So, plenty of time (on paper) to head from two sold out nights with Guns ‘N Roses at the Olympic Stadium in London to do a one-off with Strand of Oaks at Best Kept Secret. As you can see, I’m dead as fuck after driving overnight from London, but I’m also re-thinking the moments I had at this amazing festival with bands like The War on Drugs and The Tallest Man on Earth. And, of course, with my close buddy Tim from Strand of Oaks…“
“As a kid I went to Bospop to drink beer, so it was a pleasant surprise to have this festival on the Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown summer dates…”
“Most of my year was filled with doing shows in stadiums, as Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown were the opening act for many Guns ‘N Roses shows all over the world. It was great to have the opportunity to see Europe, the USA and South America from a different perspective then what I’m used to. In a way, though, it’s all the same, just with bigger crowds and harder work…”
“Halfway through the summer, Strand of Oaks were back to play at Pukkelpop in Belgium.. It’s great to see this guy is doing so well in Belgium, with steady support from people in the industry really making bands perform on a different level. This was a fun weekend…”
“On a day off in the Netherlands I always try to bring the bands I work with to The Village Coffee in Utrecht. Great people, great coffee, and great friends.”
“I ended the year with a bang. The guys in Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown did their headline club tour all over Europe, ending it in style at a level that I’m used to and good at: clubs, clubs, clubs. And pizza. And glühwein…”
